This evening I was having a conversation with Mike, the DP for the film I'm working, about CG, the film industry and festivals. He told me that he followed the Blender Foundation and that they had made and released a film for free...
It was made using Blender; a free and open source 3D software, then licensed it to be completely open. This means you can do all sorts of things to the movie, download it, copy it, sell it, edit it and anything else you want without any limitations or legal issues. It's quite an amazing concept so I had to check out the film.
When I found it I noticed that they are the same people who made Elephants Dream; another stunning short film created entirely in Blender.

Film Set
This week I am helping my house mate Elliot who is making a short film. So far I have been helping out dressing the set with random bits of cables, wire, paper and ex-russian spy plane pipes...
Here is a time lapse we've recorded to show the work that has gone into it. So far the set is looking really cool...
All thats left to do is fill it with books and then start filming
I will also be helping out in the post production stage with sound and CG.
Music: Oingo Boingo - Weird Science

Distraxion: Short Film
Another really cool animation that consists of no dialogue, just great animation to convey a simple message: Distraction in the work place. I found this over at the Twitter of Lucas Martell.
To me it looks like a Maya animation, quite basic but nothing wrong with it as far as I can see. I really like the Jazz saxophonist and then the Rock guitarist. The colour's convey the right mood for the music and the timing of the animation is great.
What do you think of this animation?
Music: Keith Emerson - Piano Concerto No. 1

Final Flight of the Osiris
A friend lent me a few animation DVDs last week and one of them was the now classic Animatrix. I've seen them before but it was a very long time ago, so I thought it would be a good idea to remind myself of a few. The first one on the DVD was Final Flight of the Osiris. Let's not forget just how good this is...

I'm trying to find out what software was used to create it, but haven't had much luck. If you can shed some light for me please leave a comment. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy...

The Last Temptation of Crust
I just found another GREAT animation. About three words said in this whole piece. It's all about the animation and I love the way the way the characters move; in a swinging, almost elegant sort of motion. Very inspiring. Very disgusting also! :D
At first I thought I was looking at stop motion with clay figures or something. But the texture of the box containing the pie was too CG for real life. So I thought they might've combined the two. I'm still not sure even after looking at the software they used, and it's quite a range... Maya, Renderman, Shake, Painter, Photoshop, Premiere and Tsunami.
Check out more from Dax Norman. I really like his work. Especially this music video for Rafter - Juicy
