Rubik's Cube

I was waiting around for something to arrive earlier, so I decided to kill some time (about an hour and a half) by quickly modeling, texturing, lighting a scene for a Rubik's Cube.

Might have a go at animating it in the summer.

Animation Stage 2 - Character Franchise: Thoughts and Ideas

I've recently been trying to find reference images for my two mime characters but it's been difficult because initially I thought I wanted reference images drawn specifically for the task at hand, but then found that might not be possible.

So I looked for generic reference images but couldn't find anything relevant; mostly images of women or bulky muscley men.
In the end I had a search for other names (in different languages) for Mime and found a list of mime artists. Then I realised who I have unconciously based my characters on: Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle

So now I'm searching for vintage photos (preferably full body shots) to use as my reference image. I'm going to try model Buster now and i'll post again later tonight after I see how it goes.

Games - Unreal Level Design (TEST)

I've noticed that a lot of us on the Multimedia course generally don't make a lot of comments on each other blogs, so I thought i'd try and change that by uploading my Unreal Level Design to hopefully get some useful criticisms or questions. Please do the same so that I can play and make comments your levels too. :)

So far my level has three rooms (green, blue and red) but I have only just started work on the third (red) room. Explore it, destroy it, make it laugh and make it cry!

My level can be downloaded from here

Cheers!

Games - Unreal Editor

More level designing going on, this time my own work. I followed the excellent tutorial from 3d Buzz and feel very conformable and quite confident using the Unreal editor... even my maths have improved slightly... slightly!

Check out my level so far. I have used mostly the HumanoidArchitecture package to texture things and random inner static mesh to give the space some cool feature. Please let me know what you think and if you want the .ut2 file to play it :)

Character Madness! [2]

I like this artists characters. The concept has something very unique and appealing about them. I might have to steal I few features for my mime character!

Animation Project - Character Franchise

So I haven't posted anything about my character franchise design since January. I have a nice idea now for what I would like to do. First of all I would like to model and animate a Mime character. Then as a narrative for a short animation I have been watching a Pixar short called One Man Band...

I like it so much; it's hilarious and the animation with all the instruments is just so cool!

So I thought I could adapt the story to work with my character. The idea being that one street mime is working hard for money but then a rival mime turns up on the same street and they end up have an epic mime battle with each other! I think the scope for creativity is huge but we will see how I get on in the practical side... please be gentle and don't hurt my computer 3ds max!

Visualisation Project 2 - Screenshots

My first idea is to recreate the visually stunning set in a scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, directed by Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil, Jabberwocky etc.)

It's a scene towards the end of the movie, where Raul Duke (Johnny Depp) has just woken up from taking wayyy too much of some kind of drug - which is supposed to contain adrenaline - only to find his hotel suite completely trashed. He stumbles around trying to pick up clues as to the whose and why's. He explains that this isn't the work of your typical junkie, no, this is much worse... and all the while with every moment passing he gets terrifying flashbacks... while wearing a lizard's/dinosaur tail!

I like the design of this set so much; the mess, the 10 inches of water thats flooded from the bathroom to the room, stains on the wall, the posters, references to politics of the time and the lighting is fantastic-it adds so much quality. It's just stunning. So if I can I will use this scene as the basis for my 3d Visualisation project.

Lip Sync - First Attempt

Well here is my first try at lip syncing with 3ds Max. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. I have probably spent a total of 3-4 hours working at this and I'm still not totally happy with the results... it's just so hard! So I wanted to post this at least to show where I am now and what I would have hopefully progressed to later on.

Last night I was reading an article about lip syncing in 3D World magazine and they made a pretty useful distinction between tracking software and morph editors... check out the article in issue 114 and the final animation here... you might recognise it! :)

This render took approximately 13 hours! I think this is the longest piece of animation I have rendered.

Unreal Tournament 2k4 Level Design

Stage 1.

The first stage in practicing level design. I am following a very useful tutorial given by 3d Buzz to help find my way around the software. Then I hope to be able to start creating my own level for the games assignment during the easter holiday. It has also proven to be a useful exorcise because my computer is starting to lag so I am beginning to familiarize myself with its limitations....

Particle Systems

Todays Animation lecture with Andy was really cool. He showed us two short films from a OneDotZero dvd, which demonstrated the complex and various ways of using particle systems.

Last year during the Christmas holiday and then again at the beginning of the year just before term 2 started, I had been playing around with Particle Systems to create a SMOKE and Dripping Water effect - the latter didn't look very good in the end so I didn't post it.
I had a lot of fun modeling and creating the smoke effect and it wasn't as complicated as I had initially thought it was.

So now that I've got this (very cool) worksheet from Andy, I am going to go through the Particle Systems in 3ds Max to show my basic understanding and post my results...

Bulwell Academy Documentary Short

I found this on Danny Peachey's Blog and I wanted to share it via my blog because in Virtual Environments we are modeling block A and B of the building. (Renders will be posted this week). I like this documentary; the cuts are pretty good and it gets straight to the point only complaint is that it felt a bit long though.
